We have developed a novel method for maximizing the recovery rates of most SWRO plants from current average of 45% to 60-65% and higher via a small change in the membrane system configuration that is feasible, practical and cost-effective for most medium-large-mega seawater RO plants. Main benefits include increasing the plant productivity by 20-25% at the higher recovery rates while reducing the specific energy consumption rate by up to 25%, or more, to as low as 2.25 KWH/m3 produced, or lower, from the currently-attainable average of 3.0-3.5 KWH/m3 produced, or higher, and reducing the final brine disposal/treatment rate by 20-25%, making the plant more environment-friendly. The process does not require any additional major equipment, and is now patent-pending under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) that covers the US and over 160 countries around the world. We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of our President and Principal Consultant's entry in the new and exciting membrane desalination industry with the world's pioneer in RO membrane desalination technology development, membrane manufacturing and plant application, E. I. DuPont's "Permasep Products", USA. His first assignment in July 1983 was taking part as a member of the emergency Engineering Task Force DuPont has assembled during his first week of joining to address the critical performance problems of its B-10 SWRO membranes that arose suddenly at the 30,000 m3/day Ghar Lapsi SWRO Plant in Malta (left picture), 6 months after its historic startup as the first large commercial RO plant in the world. The rest, as they say, is history.
